National Woman's Party Alva Belmont Scrapbook Collection - 1944.024.001

The scrapbook contains stationary, flyers, postcards, programs, broadsides, and foldouts related to the Political Equality Association. Alva Belmont was president of the Political Equality Association located in New York City, New York. (See Notes for more information on topics of items in scrapbook.) The scrapbook has a red cover with two impressed gold lines as the rectangular decorative border and SCRAP BOOK in gold cursive lettering in the center. The scrapbook cover is faded, the binding is worn. A number of pages are no longer bound. The pages have discolored over time, and the brittle pages are deteriorating with many pages torn at edges and corners.

Forward out of error, forward into light." Banner is stitched to unbleached cotton twill backing fabric covering a padded board and mounted in a gilt frame.

Rectangular banner of yellow painted fabric, possibly cotton gauze, with black painted lettering reading "Mr. President it is unjust to deny women a voice in the government when the government is conscripting their sons." Below lettering is a black painted scroll motif above chevron-shaped bottom edge. Banner is stitched to unbleached cotton twill backing fabric covering a padded board and mounted in a gilt frame.

Long purple banner reading " "Forward out of error leave behind the night forward through the darkness forward into light"." Banner is sewn of purple cotton sateen, folded over and machine-hemmed in lavender thread on all four sides. Lettering is painted in gold with white "shadowing." A flat tube of unbleached muslin is attached to top edge of reverse side of banner with dark purple thread in a running stitch, probably for hanging.

"Failure" is written in upsweeping curve with enlarged "F" while other words are written straight across beneath. Original chalk or ink markings are visible under paint. Banner is rectangular with applied gold fringe along pointed bottom edge. Top edge forms a hanging tube where front and back layers meet. Wide rectangular banner of beige cotton sateen with yellow wool gauze border and faded black lettering reading "We demand the Susan B. Anthony Amendment for the enfranchisement of women." Banner is reversible and has same design on both sides with a layer of heavy cotton interlining between the two sateen layers. Yellow border has mitered corners. There are three braided ties, possibly silk, at the right edge and two (originally three) at the left edge for hanging on poles.

The lettering appears to have originally read "Republican," but a leg was added to the "P" to make it an "R" after the banner was originally made. Curved bottom is edged in yellow fringe. Rectangular dark blue cotton sateen banner with turquoise painted lettering reading "Man needs her help but she cannot give it" in block capitals with decorative symbols. Bottom of banner is cut into points and edged in yellow fringe. Turquoise letters appear to have been painted over silver paint or pigment. Banner is backed in same dark blue fabric, joining the front at the top edge to create a tube for hanging. Through tube is wooden pole with gold-painted acorn-shaped finials, the right finial removeable. The banner is nailed to the pole with one nail at either end.
